After spending a relaxing evening at Bishops Meadow Campsite (see photo)in Brecon and eating a yummy bbq and chocolate birthday cake, we awoke the next morning eager to set off on the last leg of the journey. Coming away from Sustrans Route 8 we headed on the A470 from Brecon to Libanus. Here most of us met up and had a quick refreshment and a chat at the layby cafe, where we received a donation from another cafe user who had suffered from mental health issues in the past.
After Libanus we took a left onto a country road leading to the Roman Road. This was a rough track with a slight gradient going all the way to Storey Arms. Once at Storey Arms we were met by the support vehicle which supplied us with cold drinks and flapjacks. After this we took the high road to Penderyn. As we were the last in the group we missed the free tasters in the Penderyn Distillery!!
At Penderyn we met Eleanor (Sustrans' Mentro Allan Project Co-ordinator) and the gang from Mentro Allan who decided to join us for the last leg of the journey. We then headed along the trail through Hirwaun to meet the rest of the team for 1.30 at the old chicken factory. Once there it decided to rain, well thats an under statement, it poured! We had to hang around for a while as we were slightly early. Most of us supplied ourselves witha hot cuppa from the roadside cafe.
1.30pm came and we all headed off to New Horizons with Dai in his mini bus at the front and a police escort at the back.
We were astonished to have such a welcoming back, crowds of people stood in the street, with balloons and bangers. Triumphantly we cycled through the gates of New Horizons. We then had the Mayor present the cycle 4 sanity team and others who supported the ride in the week by cycling static bikes with medals and certificates. We then tucked into hot dogs and hot tea.
We were sad to say our goodbyes but most of us promised to be back next year to do the ride again!
Training for next year starting soon!
