'Higher Risk' of Lung Cancer From Smoking First Thing

Smokers who light up on waking display higher levels of nicotine than those who wait, regardless of the number of cigarettes smoked, US research shows. Scientists measured smokers' levels of cotinine, a by-product of nicotine which has been shown to reflect the risk of developing lung cancer. Waiting until you had eaten breakfast reduced the amount of this chemical. The team from Penn State College says their study suggests the earlier smokers may need more help to give up.
The reasons for the differing levels were unclear, but are thought likely to reflect a more intense way of smoking among those who light up first thing - as their need may be greater than those who can wait. More than 250 healthy people who smoked every day were included in the study, which was published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

Cycle4Sanity held its fun bikes rides on Saturday 3rd October 2009. The cycle rides offered took place from Aberdare to Abercynon, Aberdare to Pontypridd or even Aberdare to Cardiff. The Event is used to raise awareness of Mental Health Issues and Promote the Benefits of Physical Activity. Despite the weather, cyclists braved the rain with all reaching their destinations. More cycling events will be held throughout the year as part of New Horizons calendar. Councilor Mike Forey, Cabinet member for Health and Adult Services said" It was great to see so many people turn out despite the weather in order to join the rides and show us all the benefits of physical exercise" I know Cycle4Sanity has lots more planned and I urge people to visit the website and find out more - maybe even get involved. Claire - Day 7 - Brecon - Aberdare July 4th

After spending a relaxing evening at Bishops Meadow Campsite (see photo)in Brecon and eating a yummy bbq and chocolate birthday cake, we awoke the next morning eager to set off on the last leg of the journey.

Coming away from Sustrans Route 8 we headed on the A470 from Brecon to Libanus. Here most of us met up and had a quick refreshment and a chat at the layby cafe, where we received a donation from another cafe user who had suffered from mental health issues in the past.

After Libanus we took a left onto a country road leading to the Roman Road. This was a rough track with a slight gradient going all the way to Storey Arms. Once at Storey Arms we were met by the support vehicle which supplied us with cold drinks and flapjacks. After this we took the high road to Penderyn. As we were the last in the group we missed the free tasters in the Penderyn Distillery!!

At Penderyn we met Eleanor (Sustrans' Mentro Allan Project Co-ordinator) and the gang from Mentro Allan who decided to join us for the last leg of the journey. We then headed along the trail through Hirwaun to meet the rest of the team for 1.30 at the old chicken factory. Once there it decided to rain, well thats an under statement, it poured! We had to hang around for a while as we were slightly early. Most of us supplied ourselves witha hot cuppa from the roadside cafe.

1.30pm came and we all headed off to New Horizons with Dai in his mini bus at the front and a police escort at the back.

We were astonished to have such a welcoming back, crowds of people stood in the street, with balloons and bangers. Triumphantly we cycled through the gates of New Horizons. We then had the Mayor present the cycle 4 sanity team and others who supported the ride in the week by cycling static bikes with medals and certificates. We then tucked into hot dogs and hot tea.

We were sad to say our goodbyes but most of us promised to be back next year to do the ride again!

Training for next year starting soon!

If you are interested in doing the sponsored cycle ride next year or have any ideas for fundraising please get in touch, we would love to hear from you. admin@mentalhealthsupport.co.uk

Next sponsored ride taking place will be in Mental Health Week , a one day sponsored cycle. Details to follow or check out http://www.cycle4sanity.co.uk/

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for their support and dedication and a BIG THANK YOU to Lorraine for being the 'flapjack queen' (they were fab!).

Claire - Day 6 - Builth Wells to Brecon 3rd July

Awakened to the sound of a consistant drumming on the tent! Yes, rain... it was so wet that morning we all skipped breakfast, as inside the gazebo was wetter than outside. We headed off from Builth early, some appreciative of the rain as it had been so hot all week. Our destination was Bishops Meadow Caravan Park in Brecon.

Half way to Brecon the sun decided to come out and dry us off. It was a nice relaxed ride that morning following Route 8, taking in the scenery and small villages of Boughwood and Boughwood Brest. Half way at Glasbury we were met by Colin in the support vehicle with cool drinks.

Having sufficiently revived we continued our journey to Brecon. At Llanfilo we conquered the ever so steep hill to enjoy the fast descent. As a BBQ birthday party was arranged for Alan at the campsite we sped happily along the last few remaining lanes and arrived at the campsite earlier enough to have a dip in the pool and get some rays.

As it was the last night of the ride Chris, James, Nadine, Amy and Tracey joined us for the BBQ and we all had a sing along for Alan to wish him a happy 65th Birthday, the chocolate cake went down a treat!

Claire - Day 5 - Llanidloes to Builth Wells 2nd July

Another early start for the 31 mile ride to Builth Wells. On route we came across Kate & Kayleigh with the rest of the team at the side of the road. Kates bike had broke just as she was changing gears going up hill. Luckily enough we had spare bikes (loaned by Eleanor from Sustrans) on the support vehicle. A quick phone call and Colin arrived to swap over the bikes for us.

Next stop was Rhayader where the support vehicle was stationed with cool drinks and words of encouragement. At Newbridge-on-Wye Myself & Leighton took a break and a coffee to revive ourselves. We waited for Kate & Kayleigh then headed down into Builth Wells. At White House Campsite the tents had been erected and a warm cuppa was waiting for us.

Not in the mood for cooking some of us went in search of fish & chips. Later we met in the pub where we celebrated Paul's birthday with a few drinks & a birthday cake. Once more it was back to the campsite for an early night.

Claire - Day 4 - Dolgellau to Llanidloes 1st July

Leaving Dolgellau behind us we struggled up one of the first steep rides of the day. It was to be the first of a few! Already the sun was bearing down on us making the climb even harder.

Once we caught our breaths back, we headed to Machynlleth where we stopped for a bite to eat. Only half way on our journey we realised that it was going to be a long day. Ahead of us lay the steep 510m climb to the highest point of the Lon Las Cymru Route! We were slightly unaware of how hard this would be...On finally reaching the summit we collapsed in a heap! With words of inspiration for each other we gathered ourselves together to ride the last remaining 14 miles to Llanidloes.

Route 8 took us through the Coedwig Hafren Forest, where from we sped rapidly downhill to Llanidloes. Reaching Llanidloes about 5pm we found Dol-llys Farm campsite and the rest of the team. It had been a hard day and we were all cream crackered! For a treat we went to the pub and had a well deserved steak and chips!! After we headed back to the campsite for an early night and an early rise....

Claire - Day 3 - Porthmadog to Dolgellau 30th June

Leaving the midges and the campsite behind us we headed up the windy hill around the Ffestiniog Railway to begin our ride to Dolgellau. Myself and Leighton managed to lose James on a downhill run when the Route 8 took a sharp turn off to the right, taking us along a country lane. On the B4410 we were fortunate to meet back up with James and start another uphill ride!

Unfortunately at Rhyd James damaged his knee, was pushed off the road by a 4x4, damaged his gears and then had to be whisked off to hospital by the support vehicle.

Deciding to carry on we headed for Trawsfynydd. As we passed the nuclear power station in all its glory we came across the village and decided to stop for a bite to eat.

On leaving the village we came off the country road and onto a rough track which was to lead us through Coed-y-Brenin Forest. Fun and games later we landed safely at the visitor centre where we came across Graeham and Steve who were having their bikes fixed after doing a bit more off-roading than the rest of us!!

Heading through Dolgellau we found the campsite easily enough and were welcomed in by the support team. A good curry was rustled up and everyone tucked in... again an early night was had by all for the hard ride the next day to Llanidloes.

Claire - Day 2: Caernarfon to Porthmadog 29th June

We all headed off early that morning as we were awake with the dawn chorus! (Steve & Gareth makin a cuppa!)

Our target for the day was the campsite in Penrhyndeudraeth just outside Porthmadog.

After making lunches and distributing Lorraine's fabulous and tasty flapjacks we headed off.

As we passed through Porthmadog some managed not to see the route 8 signs for the cycle path and cycled on the train track along the Cob... luckily enough there were no trains coming!

Passing Portmeirion village we discovered the campsite where there was a warm welcome from our support team. Later that evening Chris and Sara arrived to give moral support and to see Portmeirion....after the evening meal we spent the rest of the evening running from the midges that were determined to bite us!

An early night was had by all in prep for the cycle to Dolgellau the next day....

James: Holyhead to Caernarfon 28th June 2009

The first day is over!!

We met up with Carl from Holyhead Mind and Richard the Sustrands Ranger at about 9.30 am at Holyhead Tourist Information and headed off on Route 8 on the first stage of our ride home to Aberdare. The weather was already boiling, even this early in the day which didn't make for the most comfortable start to the ride. Everything was going pretty smoothly until we came across a tractor digging a giant hole through our path. This led to a detour over a rocky and very muddy beach which tried to claim Dave's front tyre, past RAF Valley/Anglesey Airport and finally back onto Route 8. After miles of country lanes, hundreds of sheep and near death accidents with various tractors we reached a village. with a SHOP!!! Finally some food, using the loo and a chat with an 80 year old cyclist who was putting some of us to shame! By this point we were over looking Caernarfon, which was only 3 miles away! but that was far too easy. We were taking the 20 mile Sustrands detour. This led us to the famous Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!! Myself, Leighton and Claire all took the chance for a photo opportunity under the worlds longest sign! Through Llanfair-p-g towards the Menai Bridge, even more stunning views, and across the bridge back onto the mainland. From here Paul and I rode together along the coast back to Caernarfon. We have never been so excited to see a supermarket!!! Its yet another reason to shop at Morrisons! From Morrisons it was half a mile along the A4068 and into the campsite for an amazing shower, pasta, a wander around the town and an early night.

A shorter ride tomorrow to Porthmadog but Snowdonia is looming ever nearer in the distance, dominating the skyline with a sharp reminder of what's yet to come.
